Haleakala Crater is a massive crater located on the west side of Maui. From our hotel in Kihei it is about a 90 minute drive to the summit off Haleakala. The road to the summit was some what I expected to be after looking at the route on the map; full of switchbacks. What i wasn't expecting was to be, at one point along the drive, above the clouds. Being from Louisiana, where the highest point is 535ft, I never experience this except for being in an airplane. But being on planted on the ground, and being able to see above the clouds was a surreal experience. At the summit you're able to see the Molokai and the Big Island. At a staggering 10,023 feet it is the highest ever been.
